— Dr Ashleigh

Do you want to have your body “baby ready” and well balanced? Are you wanting to avoid or overcome pregnancy pains and complaints? Have you dreamt of delivering your baby in the most natural way possible? I would love to help you.

As a women’s health focused Chiropractor, I regularly have the privilege of sharing the special journey of a woman from preconception, through pregnancy, and beyond birth. Chiropractic Care is an exceptionally safe, gentle and effective way of helping women through their journey from fertility, to prenatal care, labour and post natal care. Research suggests that regular care could make a real difference to the comfort of the mother. One study found 85% of Pregnant Women Get Back Pain Relief with Chiropractic [1]

How and if you would utilise Chiropractic Care depends on your approach to pregnancy. Chiropractic care aims to address structural, biochemical and emotional aspects of wellbeing. Chiropractors utilise specific chiropractic adjustments to the spine and pelvis, and care may involve soft tissue and manual therapy, home exercises, and lifestyle advice.

In my office, the main reasons women seek assistance for pregnancy are:

  • Pain of the lower back, symphysis pubis, pelvis, legs, ribs, shoulders, neck, hands

  • Creating optimal room for their baby to move and grow both physically and neurologically

  • Support in achieving a natural physiologic labour, including VBACs

  • The 6-week postnatal assessment to assess pelvic stability and abdominal healing

  • Recovery from pregnancy and labour for both mother & baby

  • Advice on how to get the most out of each developmental stage for their baby

Do you still need to get your pelvis checked during pregnancy even if you’re not experiencing any pain or discomfort?

Being free from discomfort during pregnancy is not an indicator that your alignment is optimal. It is best to be checked out by a trained physician such as a Chiropractor who has a special interest in prenatal care. If you have previous injury to the spine, pelvis or known issues with the feminine organs, it may be beneficial to seek an assessment before week 14 of your pregnancy when your ligaments start to loosen up. I have developed a unique protocol for balancing mothers-to-be in preparation for birth, which I teach to other chiropractors to support women with the very best in maternal care. Known as The Birth Ready Method®, it is a low force series of corrections to the sacrum, pelvis, and supportive soft tissues such as muscles and ligaments, which releases and relaxes any physical tensions that may interfere with physiologic birth.

Can Chiropractors “flip a breech or transverse”?

The short answer is we do not perform the External Cephalic Version (ECV) for positional issues. I do however utilise techniques such as the Webster Technique, Optimal Maternal Positioning® protocols, and Spinning Babies® protocols. Spinning Babies® is a gentle, body balancing approach with the foundational principles of Balance before Gravity and Movement. The intention of these techniques is to optimise a mothers pelvis and surrounding soft tissue structures to facilitate improved mobility and relax any tightness that may be limiting the mobility of the child in utero.

How may Chiropractic Care help once you’ve had your baby?

There are many techniques and therapeutic modalities I can use to support you with:

  • Lower back and pelvic pain

  • Pubic symphysis diastasis & pelvic floor concerns

  • Neck pain, jaw tension, & headaches

  • Shoulder tension & thoracic outlet syndrome

  • Tingling or numbness in the hands (carpel tunnel syndrome)

  • Abdominal separation

  • Milk supply issues, mastitis, problems with latch

  • Tongue and oral tie assessment

Could babies benefit from Chiropractic Care?

Intrauterine constraint, exposure to toxins, and even labour itself can be incredibly stressful on a newborn’s body and nervous system. Assisted birth with pulling, instrumentation such as forceps and vacuum, and even the strong forces of natural birth can create injuries to the delicate structures of a neonate. This may manifest in different ways.

Signs your baby may need to be checked:

  • Irregular skull shape and flat spots

  • Fussiness and unexplained crying

  • Poor latch quality

  • Facial asymmetry

  • Poor movement

  • Torticollis

  • Trouble turning to one side

  • Muscle tightness

  • Colic

  • Reflux

  • Digestive health issues

  • Immune system issues

  • Skin health issues

  • Delayed milestone developments

  • Nerve and brain development

  • Unsettled character

  • Sleep challenges

  • and more…

Often, problems don’t appear until years down the track but to a trained physician there are ways to assess challenges a newborn may be experiencing. Receiving professional advice on how to maximise each stage of development can be extremely helpful for parents.

If you aren’t sure, I’m here to help.

I believe our health and that of our children is the foundation for a happy and abundant life.

It’s worth helping your baby get the best start by being proactive. So if you’re contemplating starting a family, are pregnant, or have just welcomed your baby into the world, now is the perfect time to get checked to discover if chiropractic care could be of benefit to you!
